A former New Haven, Conn., landfill is being converted to a hub for a new solar project.
The new project was announced this week and will see the installation of nearly 2,000 solar panels on top of the old, closed landfill. The solar field will be able to generate more than one megawatt of clean electricity.
New Haven has partnered with Greenskies Clean Energy to develop the project, and when it's complete, the company will lease the site, sell the electricity back into the grid, and send monthly payments back to the city.
“The city will get a check for $6,000 a month for the next 20 years. So that will help with budget pressures,” said Steven Winter, executive director of the city’s Office of Climate & Sustainability.
