Greenskies Renewable Energy, a Connecticut-based solar energy company, was the nation’s third-largest installer of commercial and industrial solar energy systems during the fourth quarter of 2015, according to the U.S. PV (photovoltaic) Leaderboard, published quarterly by a Boston-based research and data-tracking firm.

Greenskies had a 6.5 percent share of the market in the commercial and industrial segment of the solar energy industry during the final quarter of last year, placing it ahead of all but two of the nation’s solar firms, according to GTM Research, publishers of the Leaderboard. The rankings, which were released in March, are based on megawatts of solar energy installed during the quarter.

The company’s performance in the final quarter of 2015 more than doubled its output in the fourth quarter of 2014, when it captured a 2.6 percent share of the marketplace, ranking it sixth among its solar peers.

For the entire 2015 calendar year, Greenskies had a 3.1 percent market share, placing it fifth among the nation’s top commercial and industrial solar installers. Greenskies, which had a .7 percent market share at the close of 2014, more than quadrupled its market share on a year-over-year basis.

“It’s always very gratifying to see your company ranked among the top performers in its industry, and I’m extremely proud of the Greenskies team for all it has accomplished over the last few months,” said Michael Silvestrini, Greenskies’ president, CEO and co-founder. “From a startup in a Connecticut basement to No. 3 in the country in eight years... I think you know what rank we’re going after next.”

The Leaderboard rankings are based on the total solar capacity installed by each firm during the time period in question. That capacity is determined by various sources, including GTM research, data from rebate programs, utilities, installers, developers, equipment suppliers, and U.S. Solar Market Insight reports compiled by GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association, or SEIA, the U.S. trade association for solar energy and related businesses.

The latest rankings come on the heels of a survey last December by Solar Power World, a leading industry publication, and SEIA that ranked Greenskies ninth among solar developers in North America for 2015. In that survey, Greenskies was ranked as the top solar developer in New England, and the second most proficient solar developer in the Northeast.

Those rankings were based on the number of megawatts installed during the 2014 calendar year.

Greenskies is an eight-year-old company that designs, builds and maintains solar photovoltaic systems for commercial and industrial clients, municipalities and government agencies, educational institutions and utilities throughout the United States. Solar installations designed and built by Greenskies have now produced more than 110 million kilowatt hours of clean electric power.
