Landfill To Become Solar Farm

The city’s old dump at 260 Middletown Ave. is getting one last load — not of garbage, but of 1,920 solar panels, set to top the capped landfill within six to eight months. The plans to begin work on the new solar farm were announced Tuesday afternoon by top city officials at a press conference next to the site. Mayor Justin Elicker, Office of Climate & Sustainability Executive Director Steven Winter, and Greenskies Clean Energy Vice President Ryan Linares all spoke at the event.

Two new solar panel parking canopies containing nearly 1,000 solar panels in total will be installed in the parking lots of L.W. Beecher Museum Magnet School and Hill Central School this summer. Mayor Justin Elicker, city climate czar Steve Winter, and other city and school district officials made that announcement at a Tuesday morning press conference held outside of Beecher School at 100 Jewel St.

Mayor Justin Elicker joked about the heat, which by the time late this morning he and others had joined to announce a new renewable energy source for schools, it had reached 95°F, with a feels-like temp of 101°F.

While most systems were installed on rooftops, Hackensack High School features a combination of rooftop and carport solar arrays. Together, these systems encompass more than 3,600 solar panels.
