Greenskies’ new pair of dual-purpose solar power generation and agricultural co-use projects in Orange and East Windsor, Conn., will begin construction later this year after recently receiving approval from the Connecticut Siting Council.

Energy firm Greenskies Clean Focus, which is developing both projects, said the solar farms will be based on agricultural land, an intersection sometimes known as “agrivoltaics” or “agrisolar.” Construction is expected to begin later this year, according to company officials.

“Greenskies is excited to support a growing community of forward-thinking farmers across Connecticut,” said Stanley Chin, president and CEO of Greenskies.

The Connecticut-based firm received approvals to bring farming to two solar fields in a practice called agrivoltaics.

The project, at the Covenant Living of Cromwell new Town Center, is projected to save $1.4 million over the next 20 years according to a press release.

The installation of 356 solar panels at the town’s senior living retirement community is expected to save the facility $40,000 a year in energy costs.
